PROMISE Scholars will undertake and complete a Master's Degree in either School Counseling or Social Work. Additionally, scholars are required to meet Project Specific Requirements.
Masters of Social Work (MSW)
The nationally ranked Master of Social Work Program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and structured to meet the needs of today’s working professionals. The Mission of the MSW Program is to prepare advanced scholar practitioners to improve the lives of individuals and families, enhance community well-being, and advocate for policies that support systemic change. Graduates of the MSW program will be able to (a) deliver evidence-based social work practice to diverse client systems, (b) advocate for vulnerable populations at the individual, group, and community levels, (c) engage in culturally competent advanced social work practice with diverse groups, (d) analyze, formulate, and influence organizational and government policies, (e) Apply social work values and ethics to practice. Masters of Arts in School Counseling (MSC)
The Master of Arts Degree in School Counseling (MSC) is designed to provide prospective school counselors with the skills necessary to establish and conduct effective developmental guidance and counseling programs in the pre-k-12 school setting. The school counseling program meets accreditation criteria of The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CEAP; formally NCATE) and Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). MSC Curriculum Students in the MSC Program are trained through a comprehensive curriculum and internship program that qualifies them for work at all levels of school counseling.

Project PROMISE Specific Requirements
Field Experience To enhance the capacity of Project Promise Scholars to deliver culturally responsive mental health services as school based mental health practitioners, scholars will complete their field experience at the Tuscaloosa City Schools. The specific site for the student will be determined by Project Team Members including the Tuscaloosa City Schools, Field Experience Coordinators, Academic Advisors and Project Staff.
